Paul Matthew Oberg was born in Center City, Minnesota on April 14, 1904. He earned his B.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1925. From 1926-1928, he was a fellow at the Juilliard School of music in New York City and earned his master's degree in 1938 and Ph.D. in 1944 from the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester.
